"The purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and polish the spirit."

- Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido

Welcome to Northwest Michigan Aikikai!

Our dojo (training community) offers instruction in traditional Aikido and Iaido to practitioners in the greater Traverse City area. We're located at 2819 Cass Rd., Suite E-6 (in the Cass Business Park).

Currently classes take place four days per week. Aikido classes are held Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Iaido classes are Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (free practice from 7 onward) and Fridays from 8:30 to 10 a.m. All classes are taught by Roo (Katherine) Heins Sensei, 5th dan Aikikai (Aikido), 4th dan Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (Omori-Ryu Iaido).

If you're interested in watching practice, please feel free to stop by during practice times. (It's a good idea to check our calendar or email us at mail@nwmiaikikai.com beforehand to confirm that class will be taking place on the day you'd like to visit). Understand that the instructor may not be able to talk to you while class is in session. Just enter the training space quietly, remove your shoes, turn off your phone, and find a place to sit and watch.

Northwest Michigan Aikikai is affiliated with Birankai North America. Other BNA dojos in Michigan include Grand Rapids Aikikai, Lansing Area Aikikai, and Huron Valley Aikikai in Ann Arbor.
